The Glasgow Chamber of Commerce was founded in 1783, making it the oldest Chamber in the English-speaking world. It is an independent membership organisation, which promotes commerce in Glasgow and beyond.

The early priorities of the Chamber were to increase the quality of goods being produced in the city in an attempt to lobby the Government to get rid of smuggling, lower tariffs, and reduce taxes. Since then, it has worked hard to help the economy and businesses throughout Glasgow.

Speaker Event: NewbyCore Breakfast Club – Tuesday 5th June

I am delighted to have been asked to speak at the monthly NewbyCore Breakfast Club session on Tuesday 5th June.

NewbyCore are a management consultancy company in Edinburgh. They have recently launched their monthly Breakfast Club and hold these events at Cabaret Voltaire – one of the most interesting venues I have ever been asked to speak at, in the heart of Edinburgh.

For those of you not familiar with the venue – Cabaret Voltaire is a basement vault, which is a most unusual but exciting spot hidden underneath the city centre.

At the breakfast meetings, guests will be treated to coffee and hot food as well as two guest speakers and excellent networking opportunities – there may be spaces still available and you can reserve a place here.

I really enjoy attending breakfast meetings as I find attendees to be energised and engaged – it’s great to  contribute to a session that makes for an interesting and inspirational start to somebody’s working day.

Business people often have very full diaries but can usually find space to catch up over a cup of coffee early in the morning which makes it an easily accessible time for everybody to gather, network and learn.

The Law of Replacement – how LinkedIn training solves this mind set

Award winning writer Jeb Blount describes the world of sales as a roller coaster filled with ups and downs, peaks and troughs. In his book “Fanatical Prospecting” he explains how vital it is that your sales team stay on board throughout the entire ride and don’t become complacent during the peaks so that they forget to keep on top of their prospecting.

Jeb writes about the Law of Replacement as a statistical formula which is essential in order to ensure a steady stream of prospects. He describes a problem he encountered where a sales team had widely missed their targets after two fantastic months of sales. After analysis, he found that the team had prospected hard in the beginning and then worked solidly to close as many deals as they had.

This had resulted in great sales for two months but they had forgotten to continue prospecting at the same time as closing the deals so now they had no new prospects in the pipeline and were back to square one.

The Law of Replacement is described by Jeb as the process of replacing each closed deal and each non-viable prospect which didn’t end in a sale, as you go along so that your pipeline is always full.

At this Edinburgh LinkedIn training event, Miles outlined LinkedIn’s new user interface changes, what it means for your profile and what you need to do to make sure that it stands out from your competitors.

The new year sees some radical new changes to LinkedIn’s user interface and Miles talked about the key changes to the gathering of Edinburgh-based SMEs. Specifically, the group were interested in learning about how these changes will affect them and what the benefits of a premium account are in terms of enhancing their LinkedIn experience.

Miles also covered LinkedIn’s Sales Navigator, which helps you leverage your network of contacts to quickly find sales prospects far more efficiently than other methods and illustrates why LinkedIn is the number one business development tool. Miles also reiterated the necessity to have a solid LinkedIn profile that really highlights you as a professional – not a glorified CV – so that you can maximise the benefits of the Sales Navigator.

LinkedIn Training at BDXhange Networking Event Glasgow

Miles Duncan was invited to give some LinkedIn training at the BDXhange at HBJ Gateley in Glasgow on 25th October 2016. The BDXhange is a networking initiative that runs events for specific sectors, in this case focused on companies that operate in the life sciences sector.

As Miles reiterates throughout all his events, LinkedIn is the most underutilised networking tool in the B2B sector. And for those that do use the tool (around half the UK working population) many fail to correctly use it to the point where they actively damage their networking chances, leading to rivals snagging the job or contract simply because the prospect found what they needed in a better profile.

This meeting highlighted some of the power of LinkedIn, including the right way to utilise the headline—one of the most powerful tools and one that elevates your profile up the Google search rankings. It also highlighted some common mistakes such as using an unprofessional profile photograph and using the site like a CV. Fixing these errors need only take 20 minutes a day, but it does take a concerted effort: no quick fixes!

Delegates at the LinkedIn training event were amazed at its hidden power in helping to find new leads and many booked their places at the invitation-only Masterclass at the Dome in Edinburgh as a result.

How to effectively use LinkedIn for Business Development – West Lothian Chamber of Commerce

Just outside Edinburgh, Miles Duncan addressed members of the West Lothian Chamber of Commerce Breakfast Club at an early event at 7:30 am. The members learned how to effectively use LinkedIn for business development and packed in some networking, all before heading off to the office for a full work day.

LinkedIn is used by many UK professionals (almost 50%), yet many of them do not understand how to use the platform effectively. Instead, many assume that it is a social network like Facebook, or simply a place to post a CV or job role description. LinkedIn is much more powerful and with a few small but regular fixes (much like going to the gym), professionals can save time by making their LinkedIn profile work for them.

Some professionals argue that business development isn’t for them, yet these days it is incumbent upon all professionals to be in charge of their own business development and lead generation. LinkedIn turbo-charges this process but as Miles notes, there are common pitfalls that can damage your chances. An unflattering, unprofessional photograph, or failing to understand how Google picks up the words in your headline are both easy mistakes, but all too common.

During the Breakfast Club, Miles launched a LinkedIn Training course with the Chamber in 2017. Having understood more about using LinkedIn for business development during the morning, attendees were eager to find out how they could get involved.

Building the perfect LinkedIn Profile Workshop – Glasgow

Returning to Glasgow’s Collabor8te with another complementary event on 15th November 2016, Miles Duncan addressed a gathering of nearly 30 individuals from a range of professional backgrounds: freelancers, SMEs, and corporates. All attendees wanted to learn from an expert how to improve their LinkedIn profile to effectively cultivate their professional relationships.

Miles used the analogy of a lightbulb, in which the top of the profile is the brightly shining part where the most important bits of information live. Crucially, the headline of a profile is also the part that shows up in Google searches and Miles reiterated the importance of having the correct terms that people (your clients) will search for.

In his 12-point profile plan, Miles highlighted common pitfalls such as regarding LinkedIn as a social network (it is not) and failing to use a profile photograph that conveys your personal brand correctly. One example in a series of colourful slides was a lawyer whose photograph showed him wearing a viking helmet. Would you feel comfortable recommending him to a contact?

Miles likens LinkedIn profile building to gym workouts, because knowing exactly how to use the correct tools (and knowing which ones to leave out) helps you build the optimal profile in the least amount of time, perhaps as little as 20 minutes each day.

LinkedIn Workshop for Ceed in Edinburgh

The Centre for Engineering Education and Development (CeeD) in Edinburgh helps members (businesses and academics) in the “…pursuit of operational excellence…”. Miles Duncan was invited to run a LinkedIn Workshop on 27th October 2016 aimed at helping delegates optimise and improve their LinkedIn profiles.

The two-hour interactive workshop was well-attended and Miles used his extensive experience and expertise of LinkedIn to help delegates overcome the obstacles in creating a positive LinkedIn profile. For example, constructing the profile like a lightbulb where the brightest information shines out the top. Delegates learned to optimise their headlines to boost their Google search rankings and steal a march on their competitors.

Delegates also learned how symmetry and design play a role in making profiles attractive to the visitor. Adding useful and informative content, such as PowerPoint presentations, helps persuade business prospects that they’re on the right track. Other simple steps such as adding a website URL and a working email address will help leads to contact you easily.

Overall, the delegates found the LinkedIn workshop rewarding: “I found your seminar both informative and inspiring. Thank you. Probably the most challenging and rewarding 2 hours of my work-life this year.”

Members of the West Lothian Chamber of Commerce learned how they could use LinkedIn to grow their businesses at a special event held with LinkedIn Success Blueprint’s Miles Duncan.

Miles shared insights from his acclaimed training program and gave some examples of how SMEs are using LinkedIn to generate more clients, referrals and cultivate ‘go to’ expert status.

LinkedIn for Lawyers: Linkedin Success Blueprint at United Employment Lawyers in Edinburgh

“Lawyers would benefit most from learning how to use LinkedIn,” Miles Duncan stated during his recent presentation at the United Employment Law event in Edinburgh.

Miles told the delegates, at the event in the Signet Library in Edinburgh, that LinkedIn can really help lawyers and solicitors to grow their business and expert status but he revealed that many have been slow to embrace the online networking platform.

Miles explained: “LinkedIn is perfect for lawyers, as it allows them to keep in contact with their client base, make new connections without leaving the office and grow their ‘go to’ status. However, they need to invest in themselves to get the training needed to make best use of LinkedIn.

Glasgow LinkedIn Training Seminar: Segmenting your connections to boost your success

LinkedIn Success Blueprint extends its thanks to the 80 Glasgow-based business professionals who attended our training seminar at the Grand Central Hotel earlier this month.

The enthusiastic delegates heard two sessions from Miles Duncan on how to really get to grips with LinkedIn to help grow visibility, referrals and to find new clients.

Miles said that it was important to understand that there is much more to LinkedIn than just having a profile, he explained: “Having a great profile, that’s keyword rich and that instantly conveys the value you deliver to your target audience is vital for success on LinkedIn but this is just the tip of the iceberg.

“One of the secrets to getting much more for the platform is to ensure that you have a connection strategy and that you use the tagging feature to help to segment your audience.”

Miles told the audience that most people fail to maximise their chances of getting real results on LinkedIn because they do not create a structure to help them manage their connections.

He said: “Most people do not take advantage of the tagging tools which enable you ‘work’ your connections.”

Miles explained that he can instantly send and share content and reach out to segments of his connections, such as accountants or CEO’s because he has used the tagging tools to give order to his contacts.

He told the delegates: “I use a tagging structure that closely matches my business development goals and I have a connection and communication strategy to help me to nurture my relationships with my target audiences.”

Miles added: “So, have a think about your business development strategy and take the time to think about how you will create a tagging system to help you to segment and work your connections.

“This will really help you to get much more from LinkedIn and will help to ensure that you are in control of your business development.”

LinkedIn Success Blueprint extends its thanks to the organisers and delegates who contributed to the success of last night’s training seminar in Aberdeen.

Miles Duncan presented to an enthusiastic audience attending the LinkedIn training event at Waterloo Quay on Tuesday 15th September.

Miles Duncan was invited to speak at the Employers Seminar which was organised by the HR service firm in Edinburgh on Tuesday 8th September and shared some insights on how to use LinkedIn to generate more prospects, clients, referrals and ‘go to’ expert status.

Ian, who provides HR and employment support for SMEs, spoke to the delegates about educating staff on the use of social media and online networking platforms and stressed the importance of implementing a workable policy.

Ian explained: “We strongly encourage businesses to establish workable guidelines to ensure that they can implement a social media policy to ensure that staff understand how they should be using online platforms while representing their employers.”

Miles explained that many firms do not have a policy for the use of LinkedIn and said that this can sometimes cause confusion on what employees can or can’t do with connections on the online networking platform.

Edinburgh-based business professional gave an enthusiastic response to a special seminar on how to use LinkedIn to get more clients, referrals and ‘go to’ expert status.

LinkedIn expert Miles Duncan joined SharkDog’s Josh Quigley to give presentations at the ActionCOACH Maximising Social Media event in Edinburgh last night.

Miles gave a presentation from his acclaimed LinkedIn Success Blueprint at the special event held at the Novotel Hotel, Hermiston Gait, on Wednesday.

The who, why and where of your LinkedIn profile

“Build it and they will come…,” insists the uncanny voice in the Kevin Costner movie Field of Dreams….and this is surely the hope of every professional using their LinkedIn profile for business development. But what if they don’t come? Is there really a systematic way to build a profile that will attract and resonate with your target audience?

We believe that building a winning profile, that is optimised for Google searches and “attractive” and engaging for your target audience, is achievable for all business professionals and like all building projects, we have to start by clearing the ground and setting some foundations.

Who?….

One of the keys to building a winning profile, is to have a solid foundation and this starts by taking the time to really think about who you want to target and how you want them to engage with you?

Your LinkedIn profile can readily be adapted to achieve a number of goals, such as signalling that you are looking for new career opportunities or be used to generate more clients, referrals or position you as a ‘go to’ expert in your sector.

You will need to have a very clear understanding of who you are targeting when you build your profile, as it will generate a clear construction blueprint and ensure that is aligned with your purpose and the key targets you are wanting to communicate to and engage with.

Here are some questions to get you started. Work through the list and take the time to write down your answers…they will form the scaffolding as you build your profile.

What are their defining characteristics?

What are their needs, wants and priorities?

What problems do they face?

How do they describe their problems/needs that you can satisfy?

What worries them?

How do they buy your products and services?

What engages them?

What level of knowledge do they have about the products and services you offer?

What are they typing into Google?

Who else do they research?

Why?

What are the key products and services you offer?

What are your priority products and services that will be your ‘best’ engagers?

Do you have a lead product?

Where?

What are the geographical aspects to consider? Are you locally focused, national or international?

LinkedIn Success Blueprint at HR Dept Edinburgh & the Lothians in September

LinkedIn training expert Miles Duncan has been invited to give an inspirational presentation at the HR Dept’s quarterly seminar in Edinburgh.

Successful LinkedIn seminar in Edinburgh

LinkedIn trainers Miles Duncan and Dave Rattray have extended their thanks to the Edinburgh businesses who contributed to the success of their event at the Royal Society of Edinburgh earlier this week.

LinkedIn Success Blueprint had to book a bigger room after being overwhelmed by the level of interest in the LinkedIn training seminar, which was held on Tuesday 9th June 2015.

Miles, who gave the presentation, said that he was pleased with the response from the delegates and revealed that many had approached him afterwards to ask for additional advice on how to get the most out of using LinkedIn.
