Thanks to everyone that came along to my lunchtime LinkedIn Training event at the Dome, Edinburgh, Tuesday 15th May 2018.

I really enjoy sharing my experience on how to use LinkedIn for your own business development, marketing and visibility.

At the session yesterday, I introduced my ‘6 Quick Fixes’ session for the first time – so what’s different about this session?

I focus on 6 key elements that you can integrate into your own LinkedIn profile which are easy to remember and quick to implement.  I guarantee that you will start to see results almost immediately.

The ‘6 Quick Fixes’ session covered the key areas of a LinkedIn profile that can all add up to create a great impression ‘above the fold’ encouraging your viewer to dive ‘below the fold’;

  • Targeting: who are you targeting?
  • Background Banner: do you have one? Does it reflect your business?
  • Personal Photo: Do you have a photo? Does it mirror and align with your target audience?
  • Contact Information: Is it completed? Personalised profile URL and pointing to three of your web pages?
  • Headline: Are the 120-character spaces optimised?

Previous Virgin Money events have included ‘Getting control of your finances’ in Glasgow and ‘Get savvy with tech’ in Manchester, which invited customers to drop into the Virgin Lounge to meet experts and receive advice and tips about getting the most out of their device. Full CPD accreditation for LinkedIn Success Systems

What’s CPD?

30 day rule

Jeb Blount is the author of the insightful sales manual for modern society, ‘Fanatical Prospecting’. In it he espouses the brilliant 30 Day Rule, which makes a huge amount of sense for sales improvement and business development. Key to this for LinkedIn Success Systems is that we can help with the prospecting by offering LinkedIn training. Read on to find out how important prospecting is to your business and then get in touch to find out how!

The 30 day rule is a simple principle to govern sales patterns. Your business can achieve great success by taking heed. The key message is that the prospecting done over a 30 day period will pay off for the next 90 days. Therefore, never delay prospecting or put it off for another day. In fact go a step further than that and schedule it in. It needs to be central to your working day, not incidental. Opening up relationships opens up opportunities.

Enjoy success when you receive it but never rest on your laurels. If you’ve had a great year then celebrate it but don’t wind down to Christmas, keep following up leads because that’s going to affect the success of your first quarter next year. If you miss a day of prospecting then you do so at your peril, you will feel the repercussions at some point over the next 90 days. If you miss a weeks prospecting, or even a months then the consequences become more dire. Your sales results for next quarter are more dependent on the work you do today than the work you do during that quarter. Prospect, prospect and prospect some more.

I really enjoy spending time on LinkedIn courses in Edinburgh and across the country, showing people who are already successful in business, how to further enhance that success. Jeb Blount- “Know your numbers” find yours www.linkedin.com/sales/ssi

Jeb Blount’s ‘Fanatical Prospecting’ really is a gold mine of knowledge for anyone looking to improve their sales figures or increase their marketing reach and connections – even though I deliver LinkedIn training in Edinburgh and across the globe – I am always learning and Jeb’s view on sales is extremely interesting. In the chapter ‘Know your numbers’, Jeb looks at how important it is to keep track of your own sales or prospecting figures to improve your performance.

Jeb notes that there has been a trend of people in sales or marketing who believe that thinking of sales as a numbers game is “old-school thinking” but he believes that, the numbers are really the science of sales. Jeb gives the elite athlete as a fine example of how knowing your numbers can help to increase performance. All elite athletes will be able to reel off their latest statistics regarding their own performance; their season average, personal best and so on. Knowing their stats allows them to evaluate their performance in the quest to achieve peak performance.

Elite sales and marketing experts work in the same manner, as I will often tell delegates at my LinkedIn training courses. Keeping a record of your calls, contacts, emails, responses, appointments and sales is vital for you to be able to evaluate your own performance and make the adjustments needed to reach your own peak performance.

Jeb writes that successful sales and marketing relies on the perfect balance of efficiency and effectiveness; how much activity you are generating and the outcome of that activity. It is no good making 100 calls and contacts if they result in no appointments and similarly, making 2 sales out of 10 calls is no good if they took you the same amount of time as making the 100 calls.

In summary; Jeb outlines the importance of keeping track of your numbers as it will help you to achieve the ideal balance of efficiency and effectiveness needed for peak sales and marketing performance.

Handelsbanken invite LinkedIn Success Systems as guest speaker at Falkirk Business Hub

The wonderfully renovated Falkirk Business Hub was the setting for Handelsbanken’s latest event at which I was invited to be a guest speaker on LinkedIn training. I was invited to hold a LinkedIn workshop in Falkirk with a group of enthusiastic business leaders, entrepreneurs and start-up business owners who were either new to LinkedIn or who had a LinkedIn profile but were not getting what they hoped out of the marketing tool.

Through the high impact LinkedIn workshop in Falkirk I ran, the group left with a much clearer understanding of the range of benefits LinkedIn can bring to a marketing strategy and they were also well equipped with tools to create a standout profile and use the social media platform wisely in order to make meaningful and fruitful networking connections.

I would like to offer my heartfelt thanks to Handelsbanken for inviting me to hold a LinkedIn workshop at their latest event as it was such a pleasure to work within the impressively designed Falkirk Business Hub. This building was once Falkirk’s general post office and the impressive structure is now home to over 30 business including solicitors, translators, care support workers, plumbers and beauticians. As well as being home to a myriad of businesses, FBH offers a range of business services with offices and meeting rooms, fitted with top of the range facilities, available to rent. There is also a café and leisure facilities available to use to give you some space to clear your head before getting back to work.

LinkedIn Training for Polish Scottish Business Forum

The 3rd Polish ScThe 3rd Polish Scottish Business Forum was held in Edinburgh on the 23rd November and I was honoured to be invited as a guest speaker. While the event may only be in it’s 3rd year, it is growing in popularity amongst the budding Polish and Scottish entrepreneurs who are looking to take advantage of the growing market for new businesses in both Scotland and Poland. LinkedIn training in Edinburgh as well as across the ocean could benefit businesses enormously in this regard.
The event itself was sponsored by big names such as the Royal Bank of Scotland and WorldPay and attended by a range of speakers and great business mind all looking to share experience and knowledge in order to help grow young Polish businesses in Scotland and at home in Poland.
The event was a variable mix of talks, discussions, practical seminars and the end of the day gave businesses the chance to network and make valuable new connections. It was wonderful to be a part of such an energetic conference and watching business owners using the skills I spoke about in my own talk about LinkedIn training, to make meaningful connections during the networking portion of the event.
Of course, we couldn’t fully escape the elephant in the room that is Brexit, but a positive light was cast on Britain leaving the European Union with plenty of opportunities for Scottish businesses to trade with the booming Polish economy and many, including myself, were left with a renewed hope for small businesses in the post-Brexit economy.

The Federation of Small Businesses graciously invited me to be a guest speaker at the beginning of November to talk to owners about the importance of their online presence. The event, held on the 2nd November in Glenrothes, saw me give a high impact LinkedIn training workshop to a group of enthusiastic Scottish business leaders to help them better understand LinkedIn and how to make it work for their business.

LinkedIn’s ‘Cooler Eye’….LinkedIn Training in Edinburgh Shares Key Insights

It was an early start for eager LinkedIn cadets, who got up early and made the 8am LinkedIn Learning event at the Dome on Thursday 23rd November 2017….

They learned key guidance on how to effectively promote their skills, products and services with expertise and insight from LinkedIn trainer Miles Duncan, CEO and Founder of LinkedIn Success Systems.

The event was well-attended, with over 85 people from a range of organisations including freelancers, SMEs and corporate enterprises.

There was a real buzz and excitement among the attendees who wanted to leverage LinkedIn as a business development and marketing too and understand that LinkedIn is the most under-utilised tool in the B2B sector.

Miles outlined how a LinkedIn profile is aligned with the target audience. In other words, the profile should be communicating that you—the individual or company—are the solution to your target audience’s problem. The biggest mistake people make when developing their LinkedIn profile is treating it like a CV or simply listing their job description.

Miles shared many profile building pointers, handouts and key insights from LinkedIn Success Systems Sales Acceleration 10 X 10 implementation model.

Also, Ken Darling was on hand from www.coolereye.com to produce a graphical recording of the event that has subsequently been emailed to all participants as an aide memoire.

LinkedIn Training Workshop Glasgow; Investing in yourself

Donald Munro and I very much enjoyed giving away valuable learnings and training on LinkedIn Success Systems, to new and eager LinkedIn cadets, who took time out at lunchtime, to come along to Citizen M (Glasgow) and start a new and refreshing journey of business development and marketing.

I was at the Brad Sugars event in the Sheraton (Edinburgh) on Monday night, along with 200+ other people keen to advance our learnings on quite simply ‘’how to be better at business’’. One of Brad’s key learnings was to read a book a week, so in that context I really admire and welcome people that come to our LinkedIn events to up skill and invest in themselves.

We have started one-day LinkedIn Sales Acceleration workshops and two are coming up soon; Edinburgh 24th October and Glasgow 25th October.

By getting involved in the post you create digital commonality and this can be used to connect to the company employees that are engaging with the post. You can then use that relationship to further penetrate the organisation and work towards your goal. You’ll be surprised how effective this technique is.

Free LinkedIn Training, Brighton – Extending Your Reach

Another successful evening of LinkedIn learning was held in Brighton. Attendees picked up tips on how to use LinkedIn successfully for business development and marketing and are now better placed to achieve consistent success in using the platform to gain new clients, retain existing ones and become the “go to” expert.

Several questions were raised about how to connect with the right people and then building a strong relationship with them.

Lester replied – Behave Online as you would Offline.

Once you have found the right person and successfully connected with a personalised invitation request then don’t blow it by behaving unprofessionally on LinkedIn.

Be active and have a strategy for how you build your relationships and demonstrate that you are the “go to person”. Post articles that your connections will be interested in and don’t make it all about you or you risk being “switched off” and may never know about it.

Be genuine when you like, comment and share the articles your connections post and don’t be shy in asking for referrals and introductions when appropriate.

Remember that LinkedIn isn’t the answer to everything and it is still good to pick up the phone and call people!

The Professional Business Network know the value of networking – it’s right there in their name. So, it was no surprise that they were interested in what LinkedIn Success Systems could offer their members.

The PWIB hold quarterly meetings in Stirling hosted and run by Handelsbanken Stirling.

It’s on a drop-in basis allowing local professional women to meet like-minded ladies. Accountants, Solicitors, Valuers, Insurance Brokers and Wealth Managers are just some of the professions represented at the meeting. They already know what the benefits of building contacts and growing their social network but many weren’t using the full power of LinkedIn to expand their virtual network.

Miles attended one of their meetings recently to give them the low-down on what LinkedIn Success Systems does and to promote our LinkedIn courses in Glasgow, Edinburgh and the surrounding areas. Against a backdrop of coffee and croissants he pointed out common misconceptions about LinkedIn. He covered how changing the way you view LinkedIn will allow you to unlock its hidden potential and showed them how to begin to actively use it as a database of potential sales leads rather than a shop window for their business.

The presentation was very well received with several attendees coming up afterwards to gain further tips and tricks for making the most of what LinkedIn can offer and to enquire further about LinkedIn training in Glasgow and Edinburgh.

It’s simple but it isn’t easy

This sporting quote, most notably associated with golf, is the mantra I have adopted throughout my career in Sales and Business Development.

It is a basic truth that hard work breeds success and yet many seek to mystify and complicate the process for no obvious reason than to sell a book, a training course or seek recognition as an expert.

Another favourite sporting quote of mine is “Hard work beats talent, when talent doesn’t work”, which also has direct parallels to the world of selling and business development.

I was gifted a brilliant book last week, “Fanatical Prospecting” by Jeb Blount, which is brutally honest in its assessment of why we all hit sales slumps from time to time. The book advises how businesses and individuals can get out of these slumps and make sure they never go back there again.

The answer is simple – prospecting.

Prospecting is hard and something that we happily avoid when we have a full pipeline, a feeling of security and other, easier activities to occupy our time. As Blount points out, stepping back from prospecting is a mistake and will lead to failure down the line and so we should maintain our prospecting at all times.

So, how do we prospect? For maximum success, use a mixture of techniques and establish a balance between cold calling, networking, emailing and now LinkedIn. The temptation is to focus on your preferred method but putting all your eggs in one basket is also a mistake.

With the continuing rise in Social Selling, the role of LinkedIn in the prospecting mix is becoming increasingly important. Therefore, understanding the platform fully is crucial to blending it successfully in to your daily prospecting regime.

LinkedIn training enables you to locate prospects accurately and be constantly on the lookout for new contacts. A well-structured and organised LinkedIn presence also makes it easy for new prospects to find you and for you to remain visible and strongly on their radar.

To achieve this, you need to be able to identify access points and learn how to use the database to its full potential to establish and nurture relationships.

LinkedIn Training in Tunbridge Wells – Successful Engagement without Selling!

A successful evening of LinkedIn learning was held in Tunbridge Wells, where attendees picked up tips on how to use LinkedIn successfully for business development and marketing; enabling them to achieve consistent success in using the platform to gain new clients, retain existing ones and become the “go to” expert.

One attendee asked a question about activity on LinkedIn – “How do I engage with my followers without selling to them”?

Lester replied – Engagement should be regular and not all about you!

A common mistake users make is to make all their posts about them, their company and the products they are trying to sell. Whilst this may seem the right thing to do, it can quickly become “boring” to your connections who will “dread” your posts appearing in their news feeds to the point where they may switch you off.

Instead, think about articles and news items that your connections will be interested in reading. These will vary from specific industry news to articles dealing with day to day work issues and can be found readily from a variety of content providers. Then, from time to time post articles about yourself.

Also remember to like, comment and share the articles your connections post to remain active with them. It is important to be genuine though, so don’t over do it!

LinkedIn Training in Glasgow – Cyber Event Cybercrime and the Legal and Regulatory Landscape Event

The Future of Cyber Security Scotland Conference was held on 22nd June this year and LinkedIn Success Systems were proud to sponsor the highly important event. In this digital age where so much business is now done online, cyber security is more important than ever. With online transactions and cloud storage, never has more sensitive and confidential information been kept online which is why you must consider cyber security in every aspect of your business.

LSS’ associate partner Donald Munro headed to the event to represent LSS and he also hosted an exhibition stand. LinkedIn Workshop Glasgow for business development and marketing results; what should I do with unsolicited connection requests?

Another great evening at the very new ‘’The Studio’’ purpose designed events venue (http://studiovenues.co.uk/venues/glasgow/ ) with a new platoon of LinkedIn Cadets, learning how to use LinkedIn as a business development and marketing tool. Driving new business, referral business and visibility, that all equates to growth.

LinkedIn is a superb B2B tool enabling users to achieve consistent success in using the platform to generate new clients, referrals and ‘go to’ expert status.

One cadet asked a very common question ‘what do I do with all these unsolicited connections request?’

Miles of LinkedIn Success Systems replied: “Unfortunately most people delete them which is lost opportunity’.

‘’Most people hit ‘connect’ without personalising their message which comes across as awkward and rude. Let’s face it you wouldn’t walk up to someone and give them a business card and walk off again. LinkedIn is no different, what you do offline you do online. However I am more forgiving on LinkedIn as most people thinking hitting the connect button is the way to go – without the benefit of a bit of training they feel they are doing the right thing. ALWAYS personalise your connection requests.

Unsolicited connection request are massive gifts for three reasons;

  1. Its an opportunity to open up a relationship, even if it came in from the cold. Nothing ventured nothing gained – turn it around and treat it as an opener.
  2. You may only work with a focused proportion of your database, which I understand, however your need ‘reach’ and by adding an unsolicited connection requests network to yours, builds ‘reach’. You must look beyond the 1st degree as they may have no obvious direct benefit and the hidden benefits may lie in the 2nd degree network.
  3. If you acknowledge unsolicited connection requests with a thank you and open the relationship…. they tend to amplify your shares…. boosting your visibility.

So, in a nutshell I apply three processes for unsolicited connection request; I check out their profile, if they seem ‘ok’ I accept, then I ALWAYS acknowledge the request with a thank you and an opener.

Handelsbanken Dunfermline serves up a special breakfast of LinkedIn Training

Many thanks to Alan Hogarth of Handelsbanken for inviting Miles Duncan of LinkedIn Success Systems along to the Dunfermline branch, to give a selection of clients and potential clients an insight into LinkedIn and how to use the platform to nurture relationships as well as a business development and marketing tool.

Edinburgh LinkedIn Training Workshop; How do you clean up your LinkedIn news feed?

LinkedIn Cadets enjoyed an evening of great learning’s on how to use LinkedIn for business development and marketing, enabling them to achieve consistent success in using the platform to generate new clients, referrals and ‘go to’ expert status.

One cadet asked one of the common questions regarding news feed ‘rubbish’ – “My news feed is full of rubbish… what can I do about it?’’

Miles replied: “Your news feed is under your control – not LinkedIn’’.

You need to ‘unfollow’ contacts that are sharing content you have no interest in. By unfollowing someone does not mean you are breaking your 1st degree tie with them – you just don’t want to see their content. So, its important to share relevant and helpful content and not purse a course of self-promotion. He is an example using Donald our Glasgow based LinkedIn training specialist’’

LinkedIn Training at Edinburgh Legal Firm inspires business connections to LinkedIn Success

A large portion of LinkedIn Success Systems’ referrals are through their own clients, and when Edinburgh Legal Firm Boyd Solicitors invited me to run a LinkedIn Course at their Edinburgh premises, they had the foresight to invite their own LinkedIn followers along to help them boost their own profiles online.
